Cheers & Jeers for
Sunday, August 3, 2008
The
Evening Sun Reporter, August 3, 2008
Cheers to David Leske and Stacie Johnson-Leske for the
rooftop garden they're cultivating above the old Hanover
Theater. The couple, who plan to renovate and reopen the
Frederick Street theater, planted the vegetable garden
to help keep down their grocery costs. Now living in an
apartment above the theater, the couple also wanted to
show how even those with little yard space could find
ways to grow some of their own food. We've heard of the
"green roof" movement that is gaining ground in more
urban areas, but now the Leskes have shown it can be
done wherever growing space is at a premium.
Cheers to Adams County officials for renting office
space to the local chapter of the American Red Cross.
The new offices will be in the county's emergency
services building, a very appropriate and convenient
location for the non-profit agency that works so closely
with emergency-management officials. The move will also
give the Red Cross access to classrooms at the county
training facility, a bonus that will come in handy for
things like CPR and first-aid training.
Cheers to Dr. Andre Lijoi on being named Physician of
the Year by the Pennsylvania Academy of Family
Physicians. Lijoi, who now practices in York and teaches
at York Hospital, had a family practice in Hanover from
1986 to 1995. We join with his former and current
patients in congratulating him on this honor. It's good
to know that young doctors-to-be are benefiting from his
knowledge, experience and compassion.
