Is the theater going to be restored?
Yes, the Hanover Theater is being restored to its 1928
splendor (or as close to it as possible). The decorative
plasterwork throughout the theater will be cleaned, repaired and
repainted to what we believe are the original colors. We will
be modernizing the building with new heating and air conditioning
systems and handicapped accessible restrooms. During the
restoration we will also be modernizing the performance area with
new sound, lighting, and rigging systems, making it one of the most
advanced theaters in the area.
When will
the theater reopen?
It is going to take a considerable
amount of work to
completely restore the theater. Our original plan was to
have the theater operational by Christmas of 2008 with limited capabilities
and make further improvements at a later date, however, we have
now decided to completely restore the theater before reopening
it. A complete restoration will take at least one year and
once work is underway we will be able to project an opening
date.
How can I help?
Since there have been several
changes made to the building during its 80 year life, we don't know exactly what it originally looked
like. We're looking for pictures, descriptions and drawings of
the theater's original appearance. We're especially interested
in knowing about the paint colors that were used, the curtains, the
original ticket booth, the original marquee, and the sign that towered over the theater.
If you have any pictures or stories that might help, we'd love to
hear from you.
The Friends of the
Hanover Theater, a volunteer group which help with the
restoration and operation of the theater has been created and will
soon be accepting members. Please visit the "Volunteer" page
for more information. We are also looking for an architects
and engineers who is willing to work
with us, reviewing our blueprints and approving them for submission.
What kind of performances will there be?
There is an incredible diversity in the Performing Arts and
we plan on showcasing as much as we can! Performances will
include traditional musicals and dramas, movies, all kinds of music,
dance, improv, and things you may not even think of, such as
vaudeville style shows and even circuses. The most important
thing for us is to give our audience what they want to see. We
hope to work with local performing groups and have them perform
regularly. If there's something you'd like to see, please let
us know.
Will you be showing movies?
Yes, we will show movies, but they will be one part of our
programming, maybe twice a week. We'll be staying away from
current release movies and instead will be showing classic and
contemporary classic films that
we all may have forgotten.
Can my group use the theater once it opens?
Yes!! The theater will be available for local
performing arts groups to use. We will also rent the
theater to other groups for private events, corporate meetings and
weddings.
Wasn't the theater originally called the "State
Theater"?
Yes it was. After a lot of thought we decided to use the current name, primarily
because we feel that the theater is Hanover's treasure and the name
should reflect that.
Can we get a tour?
Unfortunately, we can't offer tours at this time. The
building, while structurally sound, doesn't meet today's Building
Code requirements and we are not allowed to have the public inside.
We will be offering tours in the future as the restoration progresses.
What's it like inside?
There are a lot of rumors about the
condition of the building. It is actually in very good
condition given its age and history. It is solid, with no
major problems. There is a quite a bit of damage from roof
leaks, but it's mostly cosmetic. The interior is plaster with
many decorative moldings and frescoes.
Are you hiring?
Right now, everyone working on the
theater is a volunteer. We will be hiring contractors for
certain projects and would like to use local companies whenever
practical. If you're a business
owner, please visit the "Restoration" page or feel free to contact us to learn about projects that
are out for bids.
Who owns the theater?
The theater is owned by Historic Hanover
Theater, LLC, a private company. While our
mission is in line with that of a not-for-profit organization, we
found that a private structure worked best to accomplish our goals.
Can I make a donation to help with the
restoration?
We are pleased to say that
the we have recently completed creating the Friends of the Hanover
Theater, the volunteer group dedicated to restoring the theater and
operating it as a performing arts center for the community. An
application for Federal not for profit status has been completed and
we are waiting for news from the IRS. Once the IRS recognizes
the Friends of the Hanover Theater as a public charity, all
contributions will be tax deductable..
