What happened? I
thought the theater was being
restored.
The acquisition and future restoration of the theater is
a project supported by our parent organization,
Casual Arts.
Their primary mission is to support projects that use the
performing arts as part of a downtown revitalization.
Initially their plan was to begin the restoration right away,
however the organizations and individuals from which Casual Arts
obtains funding for restorations felt that the restoration
should be postponed until Hanover's revitalization was in full
swing. After that decision was made our consultants as
well as people in Hanover have expressed a concern that delaying
the restoration could stall Hanover's revitalization movement
and it it has now been decided that the best thing for Hanover's
revitalization is to transfer the theater to another
organization or individual who will operate it as a public
building (theater, music hall, museum, etc).
Wasn't the theater originally called the "State
Theater"?
Yes it was. In 1961 the name
was changed after a "modernization" was done to the theater. We decided to
continue to use the current name primarily
because we feel that the theater is Hanover's treasure and the name
should reflect that.
Can we get a tour?
Unfortunately, we can't offer tours
to the general public. The
building, while structurally sound, doesn't meet today's Building
Code requirements and we are not allowed to have the public inside.
What's it like inside?
There are a lot of rumors about the
condition of the building. It is actually in very good
condition given its age and history. It is solid, with no
major problems. There is a quite a bit of cosmetic damage from roof
leaks, but nothing structural. The interior is plaster with
many decorative moldings and frescoes.
Who owns the theater?
The theater is owned by Historic Hanover
Theater, LLC, a private holding company which is dedicated to
preserving the
theater.
