Marquee examined
and pigeon-proofed
June 28, 2008
Damage not as severe as expected!
Long on the list of things to do has been to inspect the
Marquee to evaluate the damage it has received over the years
and install fencing to keep pigeons from nesting. This
spring the pigeons beat us and we've been waiting for them to
finish raising their of young as we didn't want to disturb them.
Pigeons can have up to 6 clutches a year, so when we found that
the two nesting pairs had fledged their babies we knew it would
be only a week or so before they had started a new batch.
Working between scattered rain showers, Dave used a manlift on
loan from Trillium Services in Richmond, VA to reach the marquee
and install fencing where the glass was missing.
The marquee has been hit by trucks on two occasions.
The most noticeable damage is from when a Coca-Cola truck
swerved to avoid an accident and hit the side of the marquee
that faces the square. While an engineer had been called
in to confirm that there was no structural damage, there was no
information on the extent of the cosmetic damage. While
from the ground the damage looks significant, we discovered that
the marquee was built in a modular fashion and that the damage
is limited to three pieces of stainless steel trim. A
number of neon tubes were broken as well, but they are easily
replaced. On the other side of the marquee, there is a
small dent in one piece of trim from when a truck backed into
it. Nestled in one of the mangled pieces of trim Dave
found a nest with several baby birds. As soon as they're
fledged we'll be out again to cover up that hole.
